Strong start for McKinstry as Uganda Cranes beats Ethiopia

International Friendly Match: Ethiopia 0-1 Uganda Cranes

Uganda Cranes registered a 1-0 victory over Ethiopia during the international build up match played at the Bahir Dar Stadium on Sunday.

Emmanuel Arnold Okwi headed home the game’s lone strike  that kicked off the first of the many international matches lined up for newly appointed Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry.

Okwi nodded the goal following a well delivered cross by left winger Joseph Benson Ochaya in the 20th minute of the well attended game in the horn of Africa country.

There was no further goal from either side after that as Uganda Cranes defence held it tight and efforts by the forwards to double the lead were frustrated by the solid Ethiopian back line.

Abdul Lumala (middle) dribbles during the game. McKinstry had the opportunity to see his players for the first time in action.

The build up was of significance to the Uganda Cranes ahead of the two AFCON 2021 Qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Malawi to be played between 11th and 19th of November 2019.

Majority of the many foreign based players will return to the respective clubs by Monday.

The two home based players and the technical team are expected to reach Entebbe International Airport on Monday evening and later join the Uganda Cranes Squad preparing for the final round of the of the CHAN Qualifiers against Burundi.

Also straight away, McKinstry will join the CHAN team that kicked off preparations on Sunday at Lugogo for the return leg of the TOTAL CHAN 2020 match against Burundi this coming Saturday.

FUFA proud of Godfrey Walusimbi’s immense contribution to football

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is greatly indebted to the wonderful service for Godfrey “Jajja Walu” Walusimbi that he has offered to football in general and the national team (Uganda Cranes).

Having officially announced his retirement from international football on 5th October 2019, the federation is humbled for great part he has had in football over the years in club football and the national team.

FUFA shall forever remember the fond and great memories especially when you ruled the left back role of Uganda for a decade ably controlling the world’s finest players as Muhammed Salah and the like. FUFA is proud of your services and commitment to this great Nation Uganda whenever you played and we wish you fruitful deliberations in future

Walusimbi earned 105 caps for Uganda Cranes since 2009 and had his name inked for the right reasons as part of the team that played two back to back Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Championships in 2017 and 2019 hosted by Gabon and Egypt respectively.
