AFCON 2019 Egypt: FUFA Statement on Uganda Cranes in Cairo

On the 2nd July 2019, The Uganda Cranes did not undergo training after players opted not to despite a training programme released by the technical team.

FUFA has since engaged the players and confirmed that a complaint about emoluments as their cause of action.

FUFA wishes to affirm that matters of the rights and obligations of the members of the Uganda Cranes at the AFCON 2019 inclusive of the allowances and bonuses of the team were discussed and agreed upon by the team and were put into a document called the Code of Conduct. Every member of the team signed the Code of Conduct before being allowed into the camp.

    The financial structure to be paid to each member of the Uganda Cranes in the Code of Conduct is as follows;

    Item   USD
Camp in Uganda per day 14 days 30
Foreign Camp (Abu Dhabi & Cairo) per day 53 days 150
Each Draw in the Group Stages 2,000
Each Win in the Group Stages 4,000
    R16 to R8 (Winning @ R16) 1 5,000
    R8 to R4 (Winning @ Quarter Final) 1 7,000
    R4 to R2 (Winning @ Semi Final) 1 9,000
    Winning the Final 1 14,630

FUFA has already paid the following amounts to each member

    • 420 USD for the Camp in Uganda (14 days)
    • 5,100 USD for the Foreign Camp (34 days ending 30th June 2019)
    • 4,000 USD for the Winning Bonus of the DR Congo match
    • 2,000 USD for the Draw against Zimbabwe

Far and beyond the Code of Conduct, FUFA has also paid extra 2,780 USD to each player for camp morale and 300 USD for the International friendly match against Ivory Coast.

As of 2nd July 2019, each player has received up to 14,600 USD (App 55m UGX) already with more daily allowances and winning bonuses awaiting to be earned and paid on time.

According to FUFA, there is currently nothing owing to the players as per the signed Code of Conduct and more than 2 Billion UGX has been paid to this item alone.

This matter has been explained to the players and instead they have opted to renegotiate the terms of the Code of Conduct after qualifying to the round of 16 leading to the decision not to undergo training.

FUFA believes the players will respect the signed Code of Conduct and this matter will be resolved like many others before.

It is Our Game, It is Our Country.

AFCON 2019: Uganda Cranes makes it to the round of 16

Uganda Cranes is through to the round of 16 despite losing 2-0 to hosts Egypt at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday night in the ongoing Total Africa Cup of Nations.

The final result didn’t reflect the true picture of what Uganda Cranes displayed on the pitch especially before Mohamed Salah netted from a direct free kick and captain Ahmed Elmohamady Abdelfattah Aly added a second for his team.

Abdu Lumala, Emma Okwi and Allan Kyambadde all came close to handing Uganda Cranes the lead in the first half.

With DR Congo in action against Zimbabwe, it was all about collecting each team fighting for points to keep them in the competition except for Egypt who had already qualified following two wins from their opening two fixtures.

DRC hammered Zimbabwe 4-0 a result that couldn’t take them above Uganda Cranes who had already amassed 4 points from the opening two matches.

Uganda Cranes will wait to know their opponents are in the next round. It is the first time that Uganda has qualified for the knock out phase of the competition since 1978 but are in line to face a team that finishes second in Group C which has Algeria, Senegal, Kenya and Tanzania.

Uganda Cranes head coach Sebastien Desabre was forced to make a change in the goalkeeping department as Denis Onyango paved way for Robert Odongkara while Taddeo Lwanga came on for Khalid Aucho and Kizito Luwagga for Allan Kyambadde.

    Post-match Quotes

    Uganda Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre

‘The target by the federation was to qualify from the group stages. Now that this has been achieved, we want to stay longer and enjoy the rest of the tournament. I am happy with my players. Ugandan football has changed a lot in the last few years. There has been progress with Ugandan football. Dennis Onyango is doing well. He never got injured. He has been down with flu for the last two days but he is very okay. We don’t know who to play but we are in the path that has teams like Senegal and Kenya. I prefer we face Senegal to give us chance to play another strong team. I trust my players have learnt alot so far and will keep picking points from this tournament. I thank all Ugandan for supporting us’

    FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo

‘It was good display by the entire team. Sebastien Desabre, Uganda Cranes head coach

    Quotes:

‘This will be like another game. It is a good chance to be here. This is a good opportunity to continue with the work that we started with against DR Congo and Zimbabwe. I know it will be a difficult game for us but we ready to face the challenge.  We shall play to win. We love challenges. The first game with DR Congo was physical. In the second game, it remained as open as possible just like Kenya versus Tanzania which was a typical true African game full of attacking. I am confident about my players tomorrow against Egypt. They are very motivated. It is possible to beat them. We shall give the maximum against Egypt. The team has kept improving step by step’ said Sebastien Desabre.

Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, Vice Captain Uganda Cranes

‘We are not focusing on individual players. We are focused to take on the Egypt team, not individuals. They can also make mistakes. We are concentrating on our last game to qualify to the round of 16. My experience of playing in Egypt will also count for something. I have told my fellow players on how to approach them. We are taking one game at a time and now eyeing the Egypt game. We have had no problems with the weather conditions in Egypt because the team had a training camp in Abu Dhabi. It is a good challenge for us coming to this particular game and we shall give our best’ noted Hassan Wasswa Mawanda.
