Uganda Cranes target strong finish against Gambia after Cameroon setback

Following a tough 3-0 defeat to Cameroon in Marrakech last Friday, the Uganda Cranes will be hoping to bounce back when they take on The Gambia in an international friendly today, July 9, at Stade de Marrakech Annexe Pitch. Kickoff is set for 4pm local time (6pm Uganda time).

Despite the loss to the Indomitable Lions, head coach Paul Put remained optimistic, labelling the outing a crucial learning experience for his side.

The match exposed tactical and positional gaps that Put is keen to address as Uganda prepares to conclude the international break on a more positive note.

Uganda, currently ranked 89th by FIFA, faced a stern test in 50th-ranked Cameroon.

The focus now turns to The Gambia, ranked 117th globally who are expected to pose a different but equally important challenge.

The fixture also carries added emotion, with The Gambia now coached by former Uganda Cranes boss Johnathan McKinstry.

Put hinted at possible changes across various positions and stressed the need for improved efficiency in front of goal as well as greater defensive discipline. “We need to be more clinical and avoid conceding easily,” Put emphasized.

However, the Cranes will have to make do without goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi and defender Elio Capradossi, both of whom suffered injuries in the loss to Cameroon. Their absence could prompt tactical tweaks and offer opportunities for other players to step up.

Returning goalkeeper Ismail Watenga is expected to start and expressed the team’s commitment to end the camp on a high. “This is more than a friendly. We’re here to represent our country, and we’ll give it our all to secure a win,” Watenga affirmed.

As the Uganda Cranes aim to close out their Moroccan tour with a morale-boosting result, all eyes will be on how they respond to the Cameroon defeat and build momentum ahead of future competitive engagements.

Uganda Cranes show promise despite setback against Cameroon in Marrakech friendly

Uganda Cranes may have fallen 3-0 to Cameroon in an international friendly held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the Stade de Marrakech Annexe in Morocco, but there were flashes of potential and learning moments for coach Paul Joseph Put’s rebuilding side.

Facing a formidable opponent ranked 50th in the latest FIFA rankings, the 89th-placed Cranes were given a stern test of their defensive organization and tactical resilience. The Indomitable Lions, known for their pace and power, made their presence felt through goals from defender Flavien Boyomo, Jean Batoum, and Patrick Soko.

Cameroon broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Boyomo rose above the Cranes’ defence to power in a header off a well-delivered free-kick by Stade Rennais midfielder Mahamadou Nagida. Moments into the second half, another set-piece cost Uganda, as Batoum nodded in a corner taken by James Eto’o, doubling Cameroon’s advantage.

The third came in the 67th minute, courtesy of Patrick Soko, who calmly slotted past Nafian Alionzi following a deft assist from veteran forward Vincent Aboubakar, introduced at halftime.

Despite the scoreline, Uganda showed commitment and character in stretches, especially after tactical changes at the break. Youngsters Travis Mutyaba and Patrick Jonah Kakande were introduced in search of a spark, while Muhammed Shaban, Arafat Usama, and goalkeeper Isima Watenga were later handed minutes to gain valuable international exposure.

Coach Put used the game to assess depth and player combinations, although several squad members, including Joel Mutakubwa, Tony Sibbick, Isaac Muleme, Ivan Ahimbisibwe, Abdu Karim Watambala, Arnold Odong, and Nico Wakiro Wadada, did not feature.

After the match, head coach Paul Put said,

“I think first half we played good but unfortunately you give a goal away, it’s ridiculous, this can’t happen on this level. In the second half we asked the players to concentrate but still we conceded in the same way but we tried to create good chances but couldn’t score but we take the positives with the way we tried to create chances and we shall build on that going forward in the second game against Gambia and hopefully we shall get the positive results and i think i total we played well but unfortunately we conceded too easy.”

While the Cranes struggled at times to match Cameroon’s intensity, the friendly served its purpose offering key lessons against top-tier opposition and highlighting areas for improvement ahead of their next test.

Uganda will now regroup and continue their preparations for their next international warm-up fixture against The Gambia, set for July 9, again in Morocco. The journey to build a competitive Cranes team continues with optimism and focus.

Uganda Cranes set for Cameroon test in Marrakech friendly as Coach Paul Put eyes strong start

Uganda Cranes brace themselves for a stern test tonight as they face African giants Cameroon in an international friendly match at Stade de Marrakech Annexe Pitch. Kick-off is set for 9:00 PM local time (11:00 PM Ugandan time).

Having jetted into Morocco on Tuesday, the Cranes have held three intense training sessions under the guidance of Belgian tactician Paul Put, who is using this FIFA window to assess his squad ahead of the upcoming engagements.

Despite limited time together, coach Put expressed satisfaction with his team’s work ethic and tactical application during training. He remains confident that his charges will give a good account of themselves against the Indomitable Lions, acknowledging the strength of their opponents but also embracing the challenge.

“We may have had limited time, but the attitude and intensity in training have been impressive. Cameroon is a strong side, but we’re ready to test ourselves. This game will provide a good benchmark,” Put stated.

One of the newest faces in camp, Jordan Obita, who plies his trade with Hibernian FC in Scotland, is excited at the prospect of making his debut for the national team.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the Uganda Cranes. The reception has been great and I’m looking forward to possibly making my debut tonight. It’s an honour,” said Obita.

Italy-based defender Elio Capradossi also weighed in ahead of the clash, underlining the importance of this game beyond just being a friendly.

“Cameroon is a top side, but we’re prepared to compete. For us, this match is more than just a friendly—it’s a platform to prove ourselves and gel as a unit,” he said.

Midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga, who features for Oakland Roots SC in the United States, emphasized the value of club minutes among the squad.

“Most of us have been active at club level, which gives us an edge in terms of fitness and sharpness. We’re ready to take on Cameroon,” Byaruhanga noted.

The Cranes’ coaching staff will use this match, and the subsequent friendly against Gambia on Monday, June 9, to refine the squad ahead of competitive fixtures in the coming months.

Allan Okello’s free-kick seals Cranes’ victory over Guinea in FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers

Uganda Cranes bounced back in style with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Guinea in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night at Mandela National Stadium. Allan Okello’s stunning free-kick in the 34th minute was enough to secure all three points in a crucial Group G clash.

Head coach Paul Put made four changes from the side that lost 3-1 to Mozambique, bringing in goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi, Ronald Ssekiganda, Travis Mutyaba, and Rogers Mato. With Khalid Aucho and Isima Watenga absent, defender Elio Capradossi wore the captain’s armband.

Uganda started brightly, creating early chances, with Mato coming close in the 16th minute, only to be denied by Guinea’s goalkeeper Sylla. Four minutes later, Mato’s cutback went begging with no one to finish. The Cranes continued pressing, and Muhammad Shaban twice came inches close from an Okello corner and a Kayondo cutback in the 32nd minute.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 34th minute when Okello curled in a brilliant free-kick just outside the box, sending the home fans into wild celebrations. Guinea’s Camara, who fouled Mutyaba leading to the set-piece, was booked.

In the second half, Uganda made defensive reinforcements, with Timothy Awany replacing Elvis Bwomono at halftime. Calvin Kabuye and Jude Ssemugabi were also introduced as Uganda sought to maintain their lead.

Guinea pushed for an equalizer late on, but Alionzi pulled off a crucial 87th-minute save to deny the visitors. The Cranes’ defence remained resolute, shutting out the Guinean attack and sealing a vital win.

This victory marks Uganda’s third win in the qualifiers and their second at home, moving them to 9 points from 6 games, while Guinea remains on 7 points.

Quotes from the post-match press conference

“We deserved to win, we played well from the first minute and had many chances to score more goals in the first half. I am a proud of the team.”

“We didn’t perform bad in Mozambique but the situations like the simple goals we conceded and and red card cost us generally we didn’t have a bad game especially when we were reduced to ten men. The boys knew what this match meant and I am happy they put up a fight and got the positive results.”

  • Uganda Cranes ready for Guinea: Paul Put and Khalid Aucho rally fans for crucial clash at Namboole

Uganda Cranes ready for Guinea: Paul Put and Khalid Aucho rally fans for crucial clash at Namboole

Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put and captain Khalid Aucho have called for unity and solid support ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification Group G return leg encounter against Guinea tomorrow at Namboole Stadium.

Both sides are desperate for maximum points to keep their qualification hopes alive following disappointing results in match day five where Uganda fell 3-1 to Mozambique, while Guinea was held to a shocking goalless draw by Somalia. The Cranes remain on six points with Guinea slightly ahead on seven.

The reverse fixture in November 2023 saw Guinea edge Uganda 2-1 in Morocco.

However, history favors Uganda at Namboole, where they last hosted Guinea in the 2014 AFCON qualifiers, winning 2-0 thanks to a Geoffrey Massa brace. Massa, now the Uganda Cranes team manager will be hoping for another victorious night at the stadium.

Despite Guinea boasting several top players competing in European leagues, Paul Put remains confident in his team’s ability.

“Guinea has quality players competing at a high level in Europe, but we also have a strong team capable of competing in our own way. I believe in my players and the support behind us.”

Put also emphasized the importance of staying focused, stating:

“Tomorrow is important, we still have so many games. Everything is open, and anything can still happen. In football, everything is possible, we just have to stay behind the team.”

Acknowledging past struggles in particular custodian Isima Watenga who didn’t have a good day in office, he said,

“Even the best goalkeepers make mistakes, it’s part of the game and a mental challenge. Football is a team sport; we win together, we learn together, and we grow stronger together.”

Captain Khalid Aucho, the only squad member remaining from the 2014 victory over Guinea at Namboole, issued a passionate rallying cry.

“Our young players are the future; they took us to AFCON, and we must continue to uplift and motivate them, even in tough times. I call upon the nation and the media to support them. Let’s turn up in numbers tomorrow at Namboole and back the Cranes. We shall not disappoint!”

With history, home advantage and a determined squad, Uganda Cranes will be hoping to reignite their qualification hopes in front of an expectant home crowd.

2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Brave 10-man Uganda Cranes show second half fighting spirit in loss to Mozambique

A spirited second half performance from the Uganda Cranes against Mozambique showed greater signs of what to expect on Tuesday when Guinea arrives in the country for the FIFA World cup qualifier at Namboole stadium.

Despite being reduced to 10 men in the first half, Uganda Cranes put up a determined fight but ultimately fell 3-1 to Mozambique as the damage had been done before the break at Cairo International Stadium on Thursday.

The result sees Mozambique climb to the top of Group G with 12 points, while Uganda remains on six ahead of their crucial home tie against Guinea on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at Namboole Stadium. Mozambique struck first in the third minute through Pepo Santos, who curled in an Olimpico goal directly from a corner kick past goalkeeper Isima Watenga.

However, Uganda responded swiftly, with Libya-based forward Muhammad Shaban rising highest to nod home Allan Okello’s well-delivered free kick, leveling the scoreline in the early stages. Mozambique restored their lead when Pepo grabbed his second, reacting quickest to a loose ball after Watenga had initially attempted to parry away a low cross from Gildo.

The game took a tough turn for Uganda in the 37th minute when striker Denis Omedi received his second yellow card for a challenge on Mozambique’s key attacker Geny Catamo, leaving the Cranes with a numerical disadvantage.

Before halftime, Stanley Ratifo extended Mozambique’s lead but Uganda came back stronger in the second half, determined to salvage something from the match.

Ethiopian-based goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi replaced Watenga at the break and Uganda nearly pulled one back when Allan Okello rattled the crossbar after a smart layoff from Elvis Bwomono.

Head coach Paul Put introduced fresh legs, including Ronald Ssekiganda and Steven Mukwala, in search of a breakthrough.

Despite Mozambique’s defensive resilience, Uganda kept pressing with captain Khalid Aucho seeing a thunderous effort denied by goalkeeper Ernani.

In the dying minutes, Jude Ssemugabi was inches away from reducing the deficit but his goal-bound effort was blocked for a corner kick.

Despite the loss, Uganda Cranes showed heart and resilience, setting the stage for an exciting encounter against Guinea at home on Tuesday.

With qualification hopes still alive, the Cranes will look to bounce back stronger in front of their home fans.

The Uganda Cranes contingent will return home this morning.

Uganda vs Guinea: Ticketing Information and Selling Centres

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has officially released ticketing details for the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier match between Uganda and Guinea, scheduled for 25th March 2025, at Mandela National Stadium. The match will kick off at 7:00 pm, and fans are encouraged to secure their tickets early to avoid last-minute rush.

Category Three, which includes ordinary tickets, will be available in three pricing levels. The MTN MoMo Early Bird ticket is now on the market at a cost of 20,000 UGX. This offer is available exclusively via the MTN MoMo platform and will expire at midnight on Sunday 16th March 2025.

FUFA Executive Secretary in charge of Marketing and Communications Rogers Byamukama emphasised the importance of taking advantage of this offer.

‘The MTN MoMo early bird ticket is on the market as we speak today, and that ticket is going for 20,000 UGX. However, the early bird will expire at midnight on Sunday,’ he said.

‘If you are a person who loves the most affordable tickets, please go to your MoMo Pay platform and acquire that ticket.’

After the early bird period, a second pricing level will be available through MTN MoMo at 25,000 UGX. Beyond this, regular ordinary tickets will be sold at 30,000 UGX at designated selling points.

Category Two tickets, identified as Silver, will be sold at 50,000 UGX. Byamukama clarified the transition from VIP terminology, stating, ‘Category Two is the Silver ticket, which is what we’ve been calling VIP tickets. Category One, which consists of Platinum tickets, is available in multiple packages. Individual Platinum tickets will be sold at 150,000 UGX, while Platinum Family packages will be available at 900,000 UGX for six people and 1,000,000 UGX for eight people.

‘We still have some goodies that were supposed to be won the last time and they were not won. We are considering putting back those goodies into the raffle draw.’

Further details regarding this promotion will be communicated in due course.

FUFA encourages all fans to secure their tickets early through the available digital and physical platforms to ensure a smooth matchday experience.

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers 2026: Coach Paul Put; Our strength comes from mentality and unity

In an interview with FUFA’s Communications Department, Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put shared his insights on the 26-man provisional squad summoned for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Uganda will face Mozambique on 20th March at Cairo International Stadium, Egypt before hosting Guinea at Namboole Stadium on 25th March 2025.

Preparing for high-stake matches, coach Put emphasised a game-by-game approach, acknowledging the intense competition in African football.

‘You cannot underestimate any African team. In World Cup qualifiers, opportunities are scarce, so we must be well-prepared. Our players understand that these chances are rare in their careers.’

Put noted the limited preparation time, with some players joining the camp just days before the Mozambique match.

What it means to the coach and the players play in the world cup qualifiers

‘Unfortunately, we have a short preparation period. Some players will join us on the 17th March and we will start training on the 18th March, with only two days before the game. It is challenging, but we will not make excuses. We will do our best to achieve good results.

Put’s Strategy for the three World Cup home matches this year

Uganda has three upcoming home matches against Guinea, Mozambique and Somalia. Coach Put prefers to focus on performance rather than calculations.

‘I do not like to overthink. We performed well away in the AFCON qualifiers and we should maintain that level. At home, we need to make a difference. The key is to focus on our game rather than stressing over numbers.’

Put on emerging young talent Sibbick Toby, Watambala Abdul Karim, Patrick Kakande and team dynamics

Put downplayed the reliance on individual players, stressing the importance of a team-first mentality. ‘The entire team is crucial. We do not have irreplaceable top-level players. We are missing Halid Lwaliwa, Elio Capradossi and Arnold Odongo through injury who are key in defense, but Uganda’s strength lies in collective effort and mentality.

Put on the World Cup ambitions

With Uganda aiming to qualify for its first ever World Cup, Put highlighted the importance of seizing the moment.

‘Every game is crucial. You do not get many chances to qualify for a World Cup in your career.  I have been close before and when you are close, you want more. Uganda must push forward and stay focused.’

Put on the immense support by Ugandan football fans

Put urged Ugandan fans to rally behind the team, as their support creates a positive atmosphere that boosts performance.

‘Our strength comes from mentality and unity. Fans play a significant role in this. Ugandans love football, and their support gives us the energy we need.’

    Travel plans for the team

The Uganda Cranes Squad will camp in Egypt with the travel of the local based players starting on 15th March. The foreign based players will join the residential camp in Cairo after the weekend of (15-16 March) matches with their clubs ahead of the Mozambique clash.

With six points already collected, Uganda Cranes will aim to collect three points in Cairo off Mozambique and then maximise their home advantage for a strong push in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Draw for the biennial continental tournament was held at the prestigious Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat.

Uganda was represented at the Draw event by Head Coach Paul Joseph Put and National Teams’ Officer Paul Mukatabala.

    Denis Omedi-Forward

‘It is not a very bad group. Each and every single game won’t be easy. Each team that has made it to this stage, deserves it. The first game of the competition is important and we need to be focused. We shall be in Morocco to defend our Nation. It’s a group that any team has a chance to get out to the next round’

Coach Paul Put Rallies Ugandans As Cranes Finalize Preparations for CHAN 2024 Qualifiers Clash Against Burundi

The Uganda Cranes CHAN team held their final preparations on Saturday morning at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, ahead of the return leg match against Burundi in the CHAN 2024 Qualifiers.

All 26 summoned players are in excellent shape and trained collectively under the close supervision of the technical team, attentively following instructions and tactics for the anticipated match.

Head Coach Paul Put stated that they are focused on building a strong CHAN team, emphasising minimal changes to the squad to foster cohesion and strong partnerships among the players.

‘We are analysing the CHAN team, and after assessing the first game, we identified areas that need improvement to ensure better performance moving forward. If we make too many changes, we may lose the opportunity to gauge the team’s true competitiveness. While some adjustments will be made, we aim to retain the core of the team to build their confidence and maintain continuity.’ said Coach Put before calling upon Ugandans.

‘Ugandans have always been incredible supporters of the Cranes, and I believe they will show the same enthusiasm this time against Burundi. These are their boys, and they need their unwavering support.’

He added, ‘Thank you, Ugandans, for the tremendous support that contributed to the team’s success. You created a vibrant and inspiring atmosphere, and we look forward to experiencing the same energy come 2025.’

CHAN Qualifiers 2024: Isaac Ogwang Elated After Scoring on Cranes Debut, Hungry for More Glory

The roar of the crowd was deafening but for him, it was a melody. Scoring on his national debut felt like a surgeon’s first life saved, a mix of relief, pride and pure adrenaline. Every practice, every doubt, every late night dream had led to this moment. Now, he stood victorious, a striker whose target was finally met.

This introduction perfectly encapsulates Isaac Ogwang’s moment of glory as he scored on his Uganda Cranes debut during the CHAN 2024 Qualifiers first leg match against Burundi at Hamz Stadium in Nakivubo.

Though Ogwang had previously featured for the Cranes on regional tours, the pacy and aggressive forward had never had the opportunity to play for the senior Cranes team. However, his hard work and determination finally paid off.

Speaking to www.fufa.co.ug, the Police FC striker shared his reaction to the milestone:

‘Being summoned to the national team is a reward for hard work and scoring on my debut is an incredible feeling. It’s every footballer’s dream to wear the national colours and for me, it’s a dream come true.

This is just the beginning of the journey, which calls for even more hard work to remain part of the team. Hosting CHAN is a great opportunity for all players and every Ugandan. Who wouldn’t want to be part of history?’

Ogwang played for KJT FC, SpartaFC,  SC Villa, Arua Hill & now featuring for Police FC.
