  • Micho takes over from Bobby

Serbian tactician and former SC Villa coach Milutin Sredojević is the new head coach of the Uganda Cranes.

Micho as popularly known was unveiled this Tuesday afternoon at the Federation headquarters in Mengo. Federation President Lawrence Mulindwa presided over the function attended by the Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson and the FUFA Legal officer Council Alex Luganda among others.

Earlier before the Press conference, Micho signed the two-year contract.

The Cranes job fell vacant following the termination of Bobby Williamson’s four year contract. Micho embarked on duty immediately after the introductory function by travelling to Lugazi to watch the URA-Viper Uganda Cup clash.

FUFA president further revealed that Sam Timbe and Kefa Kisala would deputize Micho as first and second assistants respectively. Fred Kajoba survived the changes when he maintained his position as goal keeper coach. Micho’s first assignment will be a friendly against Libya away in Tripoli on June 1.

  • Ssentongo, Isinde to miss Cecafa in Darfur

Cecafa General Secretary Nicholas Musonye (right) on arrival in Al Fashir City, North Darfur State on Friday afternoon. The Cecafa delegation was received at the Airport by several government officials led by the State Minister of Finance Dr. Abdu Daod Suleiman (left in glasses). The Cecafa delegation is in Sudan to assess the country’s readiness in hosting the Regional Club Championship.

Cecafa General Secretary Nicholas Musonye has disclosed that two regional affiliates Ethiopia and Eritrea will have no representatives in this year’s Kagame Cecafa Club championship due in Sudan starting mid June.

The reasons for the drastic withdraw of the two member associations from this annual tournament remains a mystery.  The development sees three key Ugandan players denied a chance to participate in this year’s historical and competitive event. Sudan (North Darfur State) will host the event.

Cranes striker and 2012 Cecafa-Tusker Challenge Cup top scorer Robert Ssentongo, goal keeper Robert Odongokara and Cranes defender Isaac Isinde will all miss out in Sudan. The trio features for St. George FC who have opted out of the tournament.

Musonye made the revelation this Monday afternoon while meeting journalists at Taka Hotel in Khartoum City. Tanzania will have both Simba and Young SC in the tournament. Young SC are the defending champions.  Sudanese duo giants El Merriekh and Al Hilal are among the other confirmed participants.

The full list of confirmed clubs are: El Merriekh (Sudan), APR (Rwanda), Simba (Tanzania Mainland), Elman (Somalia), Al Hilal (Sudan), Tusker (Tusker), El Nasr (South Sudan), Super Falcons (Zanzibar), Young Africans (Tanzania Mainland) – Defending champs, Express  (Uganda), Vital’O (Burundi) and Ports (Djibouti).

  • Misguided Missiles Will not Deliver Ugandan Football to Canaan

Let me take this opportunity to add my voice to the millions who have already opinionated about the state and future of Ugandan Football.

We need to look at our society more holistically if we are to make a scientific analysis and obtain real solutions. What is the state of the nation in all areas of life? Sport gets most stick for crimes of the society and the generation yet it is a subset. This is because sport has international competitions to compare with other countries and when the results do not come by, we look for solutions from sports instead of the society.

Imagine if we had an Africa Cup of Nations in Education, Roads, Poverty, Governance, Health, etc would Uganda rank among the top 16 African states? Why do we then think it is in football where we must belong to the top 16 in Africa by right yet Sport in this country is nth (where n is a large number) priority order of the national interests if the national budget allocation is anything to go by?

Whenever the homosexuality and drugs abuse debates come up about Ugandan football, critics are bent at looking for answers from football yet it is a society challenge. If we make wrong diagnostics, definitely we shall make wrong prescriptions and the patient will die.

My take is that football challenges have solutions that can be looked for from football but there are the key ones football cannot solve. Society challenges can only be solved by Ugandans (Government).

As football, we need government in the area of infrastructure, law and funding.

Football has no capacity to create the infrastructure platform required for sustained football development yet instead government has presided over the demolition of what existed. There was a Boma ground in every town in Uganda but they have since been sold off, Kampala City Council had 65 gazetted grounds but only 2 are now left, we had Nakivubo, Bugembe, Pece and Mbale on international standard then but not even Namboole now is. What has happened to Lugogo, Mulago, Nsambya where the Omondi’s and Musisi’s came from? Can AFCON qualifications really come from these circumstances? How can Mulindwa, Bobby and Andy Mwesigwa solve this puzzle? Aren’t we misguided to look for solutions from these personnel?

Look at the law. Uganda Sport is still regulated by the 1964 National Council of Sports Act, Nakivubo by the 1953 Act while Namboole and other sports grounds have no national law governing them. When 2 lawyers cause a stampede in the football industry and government cannot find a ground to put them in order is another glaring problem of the inept law. We want to qualify for AFCON but risk an international ban by activities of these lawyers that also affect the elite league funding that should produce the players for the Cranes but Government cannot stamp its authority on these individuals citing the law. How can Mulindwa, Bobby and Andy Mwesigwa solve this puzzle? Aren’t we misguided to look for solutions from these personnel?

Since 1978, we have changed football personnel from coaches, players and administrators and 34 years later we still think changing personnel is the solution? I think we need to look at other areas because the personnel will change by call of nature. Players get old, administrators will be voted out, coaches’ contracts will expire. I have been inspired by last travel with the Cranes to Liberia and my oblongata had to be put to use. We now win almost all home games irrespective of the might of the opposition but we have won only once in 12 years away from home and the reason we have not qualified. The only time we won away in 12 years, FUFA received funding from State House (Not Government and consequently not as policy but good gesture of HE the President). On that occasion, FUFA Camped away in Senegal, connected players direct to Dakar from their bases, sent advance party to Guinea Bissau and motivated the players beyond usual. I am backed by statistics to conclude that inadequate funding has been the reason we lose away games. It is only in Uganda where the Football Association funds the national team 100%, pays the head coach, pays taxes on its meager income, pay customs taxes for donated materials for courses for development of the game and pays for government services like security at football matches. With this order of event, how can Mulindwa, Bobby and Andy Mwesigwa solve this puzzle? Aren’t we misguided to look for solutions from these personnel?

The thirst since 1978 for being at the finals has diverted every mind to use qualification as an eternal measure of success. Rwanda, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania have played at the Nations Cup more recently than Uganda but still have nothing to show for that.

It is high time we get focused and make the right diagnostics and the right prescriptions for the patient to heal.

  • Onyango in good show despite a 2-0 loss in Monrovia

    Geoffrey Massa in action recently.

Despite conceding a goal in either half of the game, Cranes Goalkeeper Denis Onyango exhibited a good show in Monrovia to save Uganda from a humiliating defeat.

Onyango made several savings that would have been obvious goals for ‘the Lone stars’. Uganda lost 2-0 in a game officiated by the Egyptian referees. This was the same margin Uganda lost to Liberia in the last engagement away in Monrovia before today’s fixture.

The game started with a moment of silence in memory of the former Cranes star Ali Kitonsa who died on Saturday. Liberia took the lead in the 36th minute through Patrick Wleh.

Uganda created several scoring chances that did not yield any results.

Line up: Denis Onyango, Denis Guma, Geoffrey Walusimbi, Andy Mwesigwa, Henry Kalungi, Hassan Wasswa, Geoffrey Kizito, Moses Oloya (Said Kyeyune),Geoffrey Massa, Emmanuel Okwi (Robert ssentongo), Mutyaba Mike (Boban Zirintuusa).

  • Mutyaba could start against Liberia

‘Jjajja’ Walu in action against Senegal. Walusimbi is a starter in today’s game.

TP Mazembe player Mike Mutyaba could start in today’s 2014 World Cup Qualifiers match against hosts Liberia. Mutyaba last featured for the Cranes in 2010.

The probable line up, still subject to possible changes is as follows

Denis Onyango, Denis Guma, Geoffrey Walusimbi, Andy Mwesigwa, Henry Kalungi, Hassan Wasswa, Geoffrey Kizito, Moses Oloya, Geoffrey Massa, Emmanuel Okwi and Mike Mutyaba.

  • Liberian stadium bumpy-Muyinda

Former International and Cranes Coordinator Crispus  Muyinda says the playing surface of the Samuel Kanyan Doe Sports Complex, the venue for today’s match in Monrovia does not match the required standards.

“The playing surface is bumpy with bare spots and it doesn’t look well levelled”, said Muyinda. The Cranes had a light training on the same venue yesterday.

Magogo who travelled with the team said the federation was able to secure a hotel near the stadium. “We are residing at Golden Gate Hotel. It is a stone throw away from the stadium” he explained.

When asked to comment on the current status of the team the Vice President described the situation as being ‘normal with no alarming challenges’. “Massa and Ochaya joined us on time in Accra. The team is in good spirit”, Magogo further explained on phone from Monrovia.

About the weather, the Vice President said the temperatures are higher compared to Kampala. Meanwhile the technical meeting was held yesterday at 7pm at the FA headquarters.

  • Cranes’ camp in Accra cancelled

The Uganda Cranes will now fly direct into Monrovia City for their 2014 World Cup Qualifiers game against Liberia due on Sunday.

Earlier on, FUFA had arranged a preparatory camp in Accra, Ghana but due to lack of timely flight connections, the arrangement has now been dropped.

FUFA wishes to clarify that the decision to cancel out the camp was not based on Ghana’s refusal to play an international friendly with us. Even with the first arrangement, we were not playing a friendly match in Accra as alleged in some media reports.

The team will now leave Entebbe International Airport on Friday morning at 1:40am via Addis Ababa and Accra cities. Geoffrey Massa and Joseph Ochaya will link up with the rest of the delegation in Accra.

Meanwhile, the rest of the players attended training today except Henry Kalungi who is expected in the country later tonight.

  • Cranes’ kit man is dead!

Former Uganda Cranes kit man, Cypriano Anzima is dead.

Information reaching our desk indicates that Anzima had developed a mental disorder that led to his refusal to eat solid foods. This allegedly weakened him and relatives blame his death on this challenge.

He died from Omugo village, Terego County in Arua District. Burial details are not yet known to us but efforts are being made by my office to establish to bring you the details shortly.

Anzima served in the Federation for over a dozen years.
