  • Uganda Cranes bus driver is dead

FUFA CEO Edgar Watson Suubi confirmed the death of his staff

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) regrets to announce the death of Mr. Amir Kalanzi who has been the Cranes Bus driver.

Kalanzi passed on from Mulago Referral Hospital where he had been admitted since Monday. He had earlier been admitted at Malcom International Hospital from where he was referred to Mulago on Monday morning. Before meeting his death, Kalanzi complained of severe abdominal paid.

Kalanzi has been a committed driver and for the entire period he has served FUFA, he never at anytime got close to committing an accident on the road. Our National team players usually enjoyed his comfortable drive on top of the jokes he always shared with them.

We shall all miss his services especially at this time when Cecafa-Tusker Cup is at the door way here in Kampala.

The deceased’s body has already been taken to his parents’ home in Nsangi, Wakiso district. Burial is scheduled for Thursday at Kitagobwa Village in Butambala district at 2pm.

  • Bobby names CECAFA squad this Wednesday

Cranes Manager Bobby Williamson will name his Cranes squad in the Press conference this Wednesday.

Cranes head coach Roberts Williamson ‘Bobby’ will name his Cranes squad this Wednesday a head of the 2012 Cecafa-Tusker Cup to be held here in Kampala starting November 24-December 8.

The Scot tactician who has been working on the list for the last two weeks confirmed to www.fufa.com Tuesday evening that it was now ready for the public. The details will be given during the Federation weekly press conference at FUFA headquarters in Mengo Wednesday morning. The Uganda Cranes are the defending champions after winning the 12th title in Dar es Salaam last year. They defeated neighbors, Rwanda.  A total of ten member countries and one other guest team are expected to start jetting into the country on November 21. Somalia will however arrive earlier on November 9 to camp in Namboole given the political instability at home among other reasons.

Djibouti is the only member country ruled out of this year’s tournament and their slot is set to be occupied by Malawi, Zimbabwe or Cameroon. Djibouti did not confirm their participation on schedule and this is partly attributed on the FA Presidential elections slated for November 10. The World Football body (FIFA) has confirmed sending its official in Djibouti to oversee the electoral exercise.

A FIFA commissioner and CAF referees instructor Souleiman Hassan Waberi remains the sole candidate for the Djibouti presidential position. Waberi is also a member of the Cecafa Referees committee. In June this year the country’s football clubs suspended the former president and instead elected Deputy Secretary General Waberi as new president. FIFA however intervened and called for more orderly elections to be conducted in their presence this weekend.

Cecafa challenge Cup is funded by East African Breweries (EABL) through TUSKER, one of its favourite brands.

  • Out of Afcon 2013 but still focussed

The continental defending champions, Zambia registered a 9-8 slim spot kick win against Uganda Cranes on October 14 in Kampala after 1-1 draw. FUFA has revealed new strategies to stop such loses.

Saturday October 13th emerged yet another heart breaking day in Ugandan football history when the country failed to end the long wait into the Africa Cup of Nations finals by narrowly losing 8-9 on spot kicks to Zambia, the continental Champions. It’s now 35 years!

    FUFA wishes to:

    • Thank all the fans who turned up at Namboole to support the Cranes.
    • Applaud our sponsors (MTN, Nile Special and NIC) for all the support.
    • Commend the government for the good will towards the team and the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, ministers MPs and all politicians for gracing the event.
    • Hail the Religious leaders who stood with us in prayers.
    • Thank all media houses for the work well done.

    To the players:

    • Our players offered their best and losing 8-9 on spot kicks after a 1-0 win against the African defending champions in the 90 minutes wasn’t a bad result though we failed to qualify.
    • To Captain Andy Mwesigwa and teammate Patrick Ochan who failed to convert their penalties should not look at this act as a crime. Such scenarios are common among key players. FUFA Still treasures your contributions in this team.
    • Though lost the campaign, the Cranes maintained its winning culture at home in the 90 minutes. We commend you for that.
    Head coach Bobby Williamson

    The Technical bench:

    • Coach Bobby Williamson, his assistants and the entire technical bench, we appreciate your efforts. Thanks so much.

     FUFA commitment:

We offered all what was required of us in the build up towards this game. These included:

    • Assembling all the players as requested by the head coach.
    • Flying out a team to Zambia for the first leg.
    • Started training earlier than ever before (Sept 19-Oct 12).
    • Organized an international friendly match against Botswana away in Gaborone.
    • Maintained all the 26 players (the biggest squad ever) in camp until the last day.
    • Paid all the players’/officials’ allowances and bonuses on schedule. etc

    Our next focus

    • We shall reward our players/officials with cash prizes for this effort.
    • Evaluate the team’s technical performance for immediate action.
    • Maintain the squad in focus for future field engagements.
    • Identify the team’s weak areas for rectification
    • Consolidate the team’s strength.
    • Arrange more international friendly matches for build ups.
    • Host and defend the Cecafa-Tusker Cup due in Kampala in November.
    •  Prepare the home based team for the CHAN competitions slated for next year.
    • Put up a spirited fight in the remaining matches of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

    Conclusion

It was all done but God’s response wasn’t in our favour. His choice is no appeal! We therefore have nobody to blame for the country’s another failure to qualify for the Afcon 2013 in South Africa, NOT even ourselves. It was just hard luck!

  • Zambia survives humiliation in Kampala

African football champions, the Chipolopolo of Zambia survived a humiliating defeat when they registered a slim 9-8 spot kick win over the Uganda Cranes in a return leg of the final round of the Afcon 2013 qualifiers Saturday afternoon here in the Mandela National stadium, Kampala.

Uganda carried a 1-0 half time lead against the visitors through Geoffrey Massa but the result did not help the home boys end the country’s 35 year long wait. The Chipolopolo had won 1-0 at home in Ndola last month.

The Algerian referee took the two sides into penalties after the normal time with either side Captains failing to convert their shots.

Although continental Champions, Zambia did not look so much impressive compared to Uganda.

  • No Independence holiday for Cranes

Brian Omony in action against Senegal. The Cranes team will have no break to celebrate Independence but instead continue with their training in preparation for their match against Zambia on Saturday.

As the rest of the Ugandans travel to Kololo air strip for the independence jubilee celebrations this Tuesday morning, the Uganda Cranes will be undergoing a training session in preparation for their game against Zambia on Saturday.

The team will miss the country’s historical event as they look forward to giving Ugandans a better Independence gift if they dump the continental champions from qualifying for the 2013 Afcon finals to be held in South Africa early next year.

Today’s training session will be conducted from Nakivubo stadium. Training starts at 9:29am. The change is intended to avoid the likely injuries from the usual training ground outside Namboole main stadium currently under a sole state.

The team will return to Namboole main ground on Wednesday morning according to the communication from the stadium management.

Meanwhile Patrick Ochan who features for TP Mazembe joined camp Monday evening and will be part of the squad training today. Emmanuel Okwi was due to arrive in the country last night while Henry Kalungi comes this Tuesday.

  • Captain Andy Mwesigwa in Camp

Captain Andy Mwesigwa joined camp on Sunday morning and urged the fans to show up in big numbers on Saturday at Namboole

Cranes Captain Andy Mwesigwa will be part of the team that trains this Monday morning at Mandela National stadium-Namboole.

Mwesigwa arrived in the country on Sunday morning and his presence is a big boost to the Cranes camp. Uganda plays Zambia on Saturday in the second leg of the final round of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Mwesigwa is optimistic that the Cranes can eliminate the continental champions from this tournament. “We respect Zambia as defending champions but on Saturday we shall be at par and the best side after the 90 minutes will prosper” said the Cranes Captain. “As a team we shall offer our best and it’s my appeal to fans to show up in big numbers” he added.

  • FUFA President defends Cranes match charges

FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa has defended the recently announced charges for the Cranes game against Zambia as being fair given the deductions set to return to government in form of taxes among other costs.

FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa consulting his Executive member Rogers Mulindwa and the CEO Edgar Watson during the Press conference on Wednesday. The President pleaded to fans to turn up in big numbers at Namboole stadium on October 13.

The FA President said he appreciates the concerns from the football fans on the high charges but explained that the actual figure which goes to FUFA after making all the deductions was still small.

The FUFA Marketing and sponsorship committee on September 20 announced the charges as being UGX 40.000, 75.000 and 120.000 for the ordinary, VIP and the Gold class tickets respectively.

Mulindwa said 18% (UGX 7200 from each of the 40.000 charged ticket) returns to government coffers in form of Value Added Taxes (VAT). This totals to UGX 288.000.000 if 40.000 fans access the stadium through this ticket category only. Unlike with other national events, the FUFA President further disclosed that UGX 70.000.000 caters for police expenses to guarantee the security of fans and their property.

He was reacting to questions from journalists during the FUFA weekly press conference at the federation headquarters in Mengo this Wednesday morning. “Namboole stadium wants UGX 3000 charged from each ticket.

In total, the stadium will take home UGX 135.000.000 out of the proposed 45.000 tickets” the Federation President revealed. CAF, the continental Football body has an entitlement of 4% and FIFA takes 2%. This brings it to 6% which is a representation of UGX 96.000.000 only on the 40.000 charged tickets.

The costs above total up to UGX 590.000.000 without including other expenses like the return tickets for the professional players, training expenses, professional allowances and ticket printing costs among many others. FUFA also pays for match officials’ tickets, full board accommodation, internal transport and their allowances. During the Cranes match against Congo Brazzaville alone, USD 15500 (About UGX 39m) was spent on match officials from Morocco and Benin.

The FA President maintained that the federation would not reduce on the charges unless the government intervened on the taxes. “The charges remain so unless the government offers a cost free stadium, police accepts to offer a free service or VAT waived” Mulindwa explained to an attentive audience of journalists.

Mulindwa finally pleaded to the fans to consider the Cranes match as a fundraising drive and watch the game. He promised ‘fatty’ bonuses to the players in case Uganda advances to the finals in South Africa. Uganda hosts Zambia on 13th October, 2012 in Namboole.

  • Cranes takes break, resumes training on Monday

Time for a break: Head Coach Bobby Williamson sounded the break off instruction to his players this morning. They resume training on Monday.

Cranes Head Coach Bobby Williamson has given his players a two-day resting period starting Saturday.

The team will resume intensive training on Monday September 24 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Geoffrey Massa and Godfrey Walusimbi had a light training at the pitch sides but are expected to join the main unit on Monday.

Bobby says the decision to break off is a technical arrangement to refresh the players’ mental ability among other intensions.

The team will go into camp on September 30 as the missing professional players start arriving on October 3.

  • CECAFA Excom re-affirms Uganda as tourney hosts

Cecafa General Secretary Nicholas Musonye delivering a speech during the launch of the Cecafa-Tusker Cup in Kampala last month

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) held its Executive Committee meeting in Dar, Tanzania this 13th day of September 2012 as mandated by the Members Special meeting held in Seychelles two weeks ago.

The meeting in Seychelles attended by all the 12 members, requested the chairman of CECAFA to convene the Executive Committee meeting and clear the controversy regarding the hosting of the CECAFA-Tusker Cup 2012.

In Dar, the members of the Executive Committee in the good interest of CECAFA looked at all the documents related to the change of venue from Kenya to Uganda, and also the contractual obligations between CECAFA and East African Breweries Ltd with a view of safeguarding the interest of all parties involved.

The Committee took note of the fact that during the General Assembly in Dar last year Kenya was earmarked to host the event, but at the same time, the General Assembly was informed of the contractual obligations between CECAFA and the sponsors and the fact that the sponsors will have an input on where the event will be held in regard to their alignment in the region.

It should be noted that EABL are the brand holders of the event. But it is the regional branches, the subsidiary Breweries in various countries that fund the event. The case in Tanzania was Serengeti Breweries, while in Uganda it is Uganda Breweries who are committed to funding this year’s tournament and have already launched the 2012 event in Kampala. The committee therefore resolved that the 2012 CECAFA-Tusker Cup will be staged in Uganda and urged all CECAFA members to start preparing their teams. The Committee re-affirmed that CECAFA will always treat all its members fairly in the spirit of promoting football in the region. They noted that Kenya has always played host to CECAFA competitions and would be glad to give Kenya another opportunity to stage any of the CECAFA competitions in the near future.

The Committee further noted the region needed to work with Sponsors to promote the level of football in the zone and proposed to further seek another three year sponsorship with EABL who have been reliable partners of CECAFA for the past three years.

  • It was a fair result – Bobby speaks out

    Cranes Head Coach Bobby Williamson

African champions Zambia edged Uganda 1-0 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium to give the Chipolopolo a narrow advantage going into the second and final leg of qualifying for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals. South Africa will host the continent’s biggest football spectacle.

The Cranes have not been to the finals of the Nations’ Cup since their second place finish in 1978. The Chipolopolo are looking to get to South Africa to defend the title they won last February in Libreville, Gabon.

After the match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Uganda coach Bobby Williamson reckons the outcome was a fair result but that it will still be very difficult against the reigning African champions. He shared his thoughts soon after the match with Cafonline.com.

Cafonline.com: What is your general overview of the match? Do you think it was a fair reflection of the game?

Williamson: First of all, let me congratulate the Zambians for winning the Africa Nations Cup this year. They have a fantastic coach and very good players. Zambia is a very good team. We could have done better but it was never going to be easy against the champions. I’m happy that we are still in the tie. I think it was a fair result.

Cafonline.com. After this result, do you think you can turn it round at home and qualify for the finals?

Williamson: We have got hope. It won’t be easy in Kampala. Today it was never easy because we know that it is difficult to win on your travels in Africa. Zambia is very well organized and a very good team. It’s never an easy task against the champions of Africa.

Cafonline.com: Do you think you did well enough to win the match today and what was strategy going into this game?

Williamson: I think we needed to do more. Yes, we never troubled Zambia because they are well organized. We had a good opportunity which the goalkeeper saved. Am disappointed not to win.

Cafonline.com: Does this narrow lose make it easy for you in Kampala? Can you win the tie there?

Williamson: It won’t be easy in Kampala. I know we can do better but it won’t be easy.

  • Cranes in slim loss against Zambia in Ndora

FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa watched the game as Coach Bobby Williamson took charge of the technical bench. The team will embark on early preparations ahead of the return leg on October 13.

The Uganda Cranes registered an averagely good performance against Zambia, the continental champions when they lost 1-0 away in Ndora, Saturday evening.

The result did not however excite the hosts as both officials and players looked visibly disappointed after the last whistle over this an unexpected slim victory and there was almost no celebrations on the pitch.  The fans too, looked miserable from the terraces as they descended from the 45.000 seat stadium. The hosts had perhaps expected a bigger score than what they walked back with.

The game was watched by the FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa and the sports Minister Charles Bakabulindi among others. The team heads to the airport this evening and they are expected in Entebbe around 10:30pm aboard their chartered flight.  The result is however still a big challenge and timely preparations will be required in order to achieve our targeted goal here in Kampala on October 13.

FUFA however wishes to congratulate the players and our technical bench upon the spirited fight put up in Zambia. We shall ensure that the team goes into preparation on time and avail the necessary requirements to facilitate the process.

We also wish to thank the government for the financial support extended to our players through Hon Charles Bakabulindi days before we flew out.

But for us to achieve the target, the government should consider making more allocations towards the return leg.

At least a total of 87 Uganda Cranes fans will on Friday morning fly to Ndora, Zambia in a chartered flight to cheer up the Cranes against Chipolopolo of Zambia in the first leg of the final round of the Africa Cup of Nations finals 2013.

According to Faizal Musenze the Managing Director of Pearlsporto, a company authorized by FUFA to coordinate the fans’ air travel, the chartered flight still has only 14 vacant seats left. Of these, 5 and 9 are in business and Economy classes respectively.

Musenze said all their passengers had already been briefed of the travel details and the check-in time scheduled on Friday morning at 05:00am. Pearlsporto will take charge of the fans’ accommodation and the morning breakfast during their stay in Zambia. Additionally, Pearlsporto has also pledged a cranes replica jersey for every fan travelling on top of paying for their stadium access ticket.
