FUFA Women Football Symposium: The ‘Take Flight’ project is aimed at developing the game further

Federation of Uganda Football Associations(FUFA) has over the years made deliberate efforts to make sure Women’s football in the country makes strides. Since the inception of the FUFA Women Elite League in 2015, there has been a number of positives realised.

However, FUFA believes there is a need to even make better development and on that note, a symposium strictly looking at Women’s football has been held on Wednesday at Kabira Country Club in Kampala.

The symposium was aimed at bringing together different stakeholders in football to brainstorm and forge a way forward to how the game can be improved. These included club administrators, government, sponsors, FUFA and the media among others.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo making his remarks during the symposium

A new Women’s football strategy dubbed ‘TAKE FLIGHT’ has also been launched with the major aim of increasing the number of women involved in the game.

Former Crested Cranes defender Jean Sseninde the brain behind the Sseninde Women Development tournament has been appointed the project manager. This will run for two years from 2019- 2021.

FUFA President Moses Magogo believes this is a good move to take women’s football to another level.

“As FUFA, whenever we have an idea, we always come together to brainstorm and bring ideas. We have formulated a good strategy called ‘TAKE FLIGHT’ that we believe will develop women’s football in Uganda. We want to increase the number of women involved in the game as we aim to fulfill our vision of becoming the number one footballing nation off and on the pitch.”

Minister of State for Sports Hon. Charles Bakkabulindi was impressed with the move by FUFA and is optimistic Women’s football will attain development in a short time.

“As government, we are proud of this step taken by FUFA because we want gender balance. I was impressed when I watched the FIFA Women World Cup and I was amazed by the way girls played football. I’m confident such steps will enable us to reach those levels.”

State Minister for Sports Hon. Charles Bakkabulindi making a speech during the symposium

Hesterine De Reus, the UEFA coaching instructor who also attended the symposium commended FUFA for the bold decision and asserted this is a move in the right direction.

Head of Women Football at Confederation of African Football(CAF), Safia Abdeldayem

“It is a very important day for Women football in Uganda. This is a step in making sure development is realized. Uganda has a very young squad and with the World Cup expanded by eight countries, this is a chance for Uganda to focus in qualifying for such tournaments.” She said.

Some of the key FUFA officials that attended the symposium included first FUFA Vice President Justus Mugisha, second FUFA Vice President Darius Mugoye and Paul Ssali one of the pioneers of women’s football in Uganda.

Masindi based Lady Doves women football club will face Makerere University ladies football team during the final of the 2019 FUFA Women’s Cup on 8th June.

The development was confirmed on Monday evening following the completion of the second semi-final contest between Soroti’s Echoes High School and Makerere University.

Makerere University won by a landslide, triumphing 5-0 in a one sided duel held in Soroti.

First, Lady Doves, who are coached by former Crested Cranes starlet Oliver Mbekeka booked their place in the final with a nail-biting 4-3 victory in post match penalties after a 2 all stalemate in normal time with nemesis entity, She Corporates at the Nakawa play ground, MUBS on Sunday.

It was She Corporates who tasted the first bite at the curry with the lead through Betty Namataka just after 15 minutes.

17 minutes later, the visitors were celebrating following Nuru Nakyanzi’s equalizer.

She Corporates’ Cissy Nantongo (right) dribbles the ball away from Lady Doves’ Nuulu Nakyanzi at MUBS play ground, Nakawa

Come the 34th minute, She Corporates’ defender Christine Nambirige was unfortunate to score against her own goalkeeper Vanesa Karungi as Lady Doves swiftly recovered to lead 2-1 heading to the mandatory half time recess as the two sides’ players headed for the much needed and mandatory breather.

The goal galore continued in the 85th minute when substitute Dorcus Namukisa equalized, a goal treated with joy for She Corporates and agony for the visitors as the match headed for the kicks from the penalty spot to determine the winner.

Lady Doves smiled back to their Masindi fortress the lucky entity having succedded 4-3 in the rather tense, exciting and dramatic shoot out 4-3.

Goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro saved Cissy Nantongo’s effort while Kenyan midfielder Jackie Ogol fired wide as Lady Doves eventually won 4-3.

Despite the absence of head coach Simon Peter Ssebulime who is bedridden at Nsambya Hospital, the Mukono based side got maximum points off Makerere University.

Skipper Moreen Kinavudori scored a brace while Jackeline Nakasi and Hasifa Nassuna added a goal apiece. Catherine Nagaddya netted twice for Makerere.

Najjemba, who earned her national team debut in the Olympic qualifier against Ethiopia earlier this year, has been in good form for both school and club.

She has 12 goals in the league at Isra Soccer Academy, one behind leading scorer Hasifa Nassuna.

Kawempe Muslim Ladies 0-1 Lady Doves
Makerere University 2-0 Olila High School
    Rines WFC 1-0 Ajax Queens

The final bend of the 2018/19 FUFA Women Elite League regular season is exciting than ever before with teams still fighting for survival and playoff slots.

Whereas Kawempe Muslim and Lady Doves have already sealed their slots in the playoffs from Victoria group, the other group (Elizabeth) is far from being decided following results from match day twelve over the weekend.

Kampala Queens gave their hopes of reaching the playoffs for the second successive time a huge boost after edging UCU Lady Cardinals on Sunday.

Goals from Lilian Mutuuzo and Damalie Matama ensured the team coached by Faridah Bulega bagged all three points despite Hasifa Nassuna pulling one back for the University side.

Victory for Kampala Queens coupled with Olila’s loss to Makerere University on Sunday means three teams are level on 24 points.

Kampala Queens have a superior goal difference and lead Elizabeth group with UCU Lady Cardinals and Olila in second and third place respectively.

Uganda Martyrs High School who are fourth on 22 points also have a chance to qualify for the playoffs but have to beat Kampala Queens in their final game.

Fifth-placed Isra on 19 points still have a chance but have to win their remaining two games and hope the other teams lose.

It should be noted that only the top two teams in either group qualify for the playoff stage.

In Victoria group, Kawempe Muslim unbeaten run was brought to a halt by Masindi based outfit Lady Doves who won 1-0 at the Valley grounds.

Winnie Babirye scored the lone goal of the game coming in stoppage time. She had also scored in the reverse fixture that ended in a one all draw thus making her the only player who has scored against Kawempe this season.

However, the biggest contention in Victoria group is about relegation with Rines WFC and Asubo Gafford Ladies still in the mix to join Dynamic SS who already got eliminated.

Rines stunned Ajax Queens 1-0 courtesy of Kauthara Naluyima to move out of the relegation zone now on 12 points, one ahead of Asubo Gafford Ladies who lost 2-0 at home to She Corporate.

There was more drama in the Victoria Group as seventh-placed Rines who are struggling for survival defeated Ajax Queens 1-0 and Asubo Gafford Ladies who were sixth before Sunday lost at home 2-0 to She Corporate.

Rines scored through midfielder Kauthara Naluyima a win that moved them from relegation to go sixth on the table with 12 points in twelve games but just one point away from relegation.

Muteesa 1 Royal University completed a double over hapless Dynamic winning 1-0 in Kabojja.

The University side won the first round fixture 3-1 in Muduuma, Mityana.

Skipper Margaret Birabwa scored the lone goal for the home team to go fourth on the table with 16 in twelve games.
