FUFA Women Football Symposium: The ‘Take Flight’ project is aimed at developing the game further

Federation of Uganda Football Associations(FUFA) has over the years made deliberate efforts to make sure Women’s football in the country makes strides. Since the inception of the FUFA Women Elite League in 2015, there has been a number of positives realised.

The now annual clothes and other assortment collection campaign associated with Stanbic Uganda Cup, the pre-2018 Christmas visit at the UWESO children’s home in Wakiso district, the FUFA Cup of Hope- a football competition for Luzira Upper Prison inmates among others are some of the notable examples.

Consequently, the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has partnered with FUFA and UEFA to embark on a campaign code-named ‘Football in Community Project’ to help get the children off the streets.

The exercise will help in the rehabilitation, transformation and possibly reunite them with their families through football by introducing the kids to various skills.

The project is coordinated by FUFA Excom member Ronnie Kalema and Sumaya Kiwanuka among other secretariat staff.

On Saturday last week after a week-long training of coaches facilitated by UEFA instructors on how to work with kids, a total of 22 local instructors from different regions of Uganda were passed out and will help work with the kids at the different designated centers for the Football in Community Project.

The clash was a repeat of the Odilo Final played two weeks ago at the FUFA Technical centre won by Rays of Grace but this time round; Oasis got the better of their opponents and avenged the 1-0 defeat suffered in the final in Njeru.

Rays of Grace will feel hard done by the absence of their four key players Leonard Kasanya,  Talemwa Erisa, Mukisa Dan and Mulema Vicent who are with the Uganda National U-15 Squad in Eritrea for the CECAFA U15 tournament. The youngsters have won all their opening two games so far.

CECAFA U-15: Mutyaba nets brace for Uganda to see off neighbours Tanzania

Travis Mutyaba scored twice as Uganda U-15  beat Tanzania in a highly contested group B game at the ongoing CECAFA U15 championship at Asmara International Stadium in Eritrea.

The midfield ace went on the score sheet after slotting home from a 25-yard free-kick 27 minutes into the game, after Abbas Kyeyune had been fouled by a Tanzanian opponent.

Shafiq Waswanga (White) challenges a Tanzanian opponent

Mutyaba then netted his brace, when substitute Patrick Ouke played him through to goal in injury time, to settle the matters.

Tanzania had threatened earlier on to equalise, but failed to find the net, with Peter Gubya, who had been selected ahead of Daniel Mukisa in goal, made fine saves with captain Vincent Mulema, Caros Kaddu and Peter Gaya manning the backline.

Devis Ogwal (White) challenged by a Tanzanian opponent

In fact, it was from one of the several attacks on the Ugandan goal by the Tanzanians, that resulted into a fine Uganda counter-attack, orchestrated by Patrick Muliika that found Ouke well in a position to play Mutyaba for the game killer goal.

‘I am happy we have won our second game and majorly against Tanzania. My players played well according to instructions and the result is encouraging’ said Uganda Coach Jackson Magera.

Mutyaba celebrates his first goal forUganda

His Tanzanian counterpart Mwalimu Swalehe conceded defeat and attributed the loss to the mistakes by his players.

Magera made two changes in the lineup that beat Ethiopia 3-0 in the opening game, bringing on Gubya for Mukisa in goal and Kalisa Shungai in the middle of midfield for Leonard Kasanya, forcing a change with Mutyaba now operating on the left flank. His technique worked well.

In the second half, tiring Patrick Muliika gave way to Ouke and Mutyaba left for  Abdul Nsereko immediately after scoring the second goal.

Uganda now leads the group with maximum points from two games and will next play against South Sudan on Friday.

    Fixture changed

The organisers of the tournament have been forced to change the fixtures after Djibouti failed to turn up for the event.

This means each team will have to play four group matches and the top two sides qualify for the semifinals slated for Wednesday July 28, with the final on Friday 30 August.

Uganda will play their first game on Saturday at 2:00PM against Ethiopia and have a one day rest before facing Tanzania on Monday, but will have a long four days rest in preparation for the third game against South Sudan on Friday next week with the last group tie coming up with Rwanda on Sunday.
